Total Solar Eclipse Recap
On August 21, 2017, Casper, Wyoming was treated to a once in a lifetime opportunity. The moon passed overhead and in direct alignment with the sun giving residents a rare view of the sun's corona and darkened skies and stars during midday.
Scientific Observations
During the eclipse, our staff used an Arduino Uno and sensors to track changes in brightness and temperature before, during, and after totality. A graph of the results shows what most people saw and felt during the event. Temperatures slowly dropped and daylight gradually disappeared until the sun was completely obscured by the moon during totality. As the sun reappeared, temperatures rose and brightness increased, just like following sunrise. The day was mostly clear until a few wispy clouds rolled in starting at approximately 12:30 PM. Variations in air temperature and light intensity were caused by thin clouds moving across the sun as it neared the end of the eclipse just after 1:00 PM.

Special Guests
During the weekend prior to the eclipse, The Science Zone was visited by special guest, Ira Flatow, host of Public Radio International's "Science Friday." Ira gave a sold out keynote address on the Sunday before the event called "Science is Sexy."
Contrary to popular belief, the evidence shows that people love science and will consume as much sci-tech as you can provide. The proof is in the presentation. Ira Flatow explored how social media, stage, screen, television, podcasts and advertising are helping to satisfy the public’s thirst for science and technology. |
